What is Traceroute?

(Last modified Aug 28, 2002 )

When you connect to your site through the Internet using your local Internet Service Provider there are several hosts that your connection goes through before it reaches our servers. If there is a problem at any one of these hosts along this route your connection to your site may not be successful.

Traceroute is a tool that returns a list of the routers/hosts your signal is travelling through before it reaches our servers. This is a useful tool if you are not able to connect to your site. One way to troubleshoot this problem is to run a traceroute to your site. The traceroute will indicate if the problem with your connection lies with your Internet Service Provider or if there is a problem with one of our servers.

You can run a traceroute from your local machine while connected to the Internet.

You can copy and paste the results of your traceroute into an email and send this to support@allentech.net and our technicians can analyze this and advise.

You can also run traceroutes to your site from many locations throughout the world using a service named Tracert.
